Every pair of Atelier Axen shoes is made entirely in Shanghai — from leather preparation to lasting, construction, and finishing. This page explains how a shoe is made in our workshop, and why proportion and Goodyear-welted construction matter.
How we make a shoe
- Materials — Full-grain calf, box calf, and suedes such as C.F. Stead Repello are selected for grain, hand, and colour depth.
- Pattern & cutting — Patterns are cut to the last so the upper follows the intended silhouette without excess stretch or collapse.
- Upper making — Pieces are skived, stitched, and prepared so seams sit cleanly along the vamp, quarters, and lining.
- Lasting — The upper is pulled over the last. Toe shape, waist curve, and instep height are set here — the foundation of proportion.
- Construction — We use Goodyear-welted construction: a welt joins the upper to an insole so the outsole can be replaced without destroying the shoe.
- Finishing — Edges, colour, and surface are finished by hand so the leather and the silhouette read as one.
What is Goodyear welt?
Goodyear welt is a construction method that stitches a strip of leather (the welt) between the upper and the insole. The outsole is then stitched to the welt. The result is a shoe that can be resoled repeatedly and holds its structure over years of wear — unlike many cemented constructions that cannot be repaired cleanly. The art of proportion
Elegance in fine shoemaking begins with proportion: the toe, the waist, and the transition of each line. At Atelier Axen we pursue lines that feel natural rather than exaggerated — the same idea behind our Signature Styles. Choosing a silhouette? See Loafer vs Oxford vs Derby.
Made in Shanghai
Shanghai is where our workshop lives. Classical European shoemaking traditions meet the standards we uphold day to day. Origin alone does not define quality; process and discipline do. Honest answers: Made in Shanghai.
