THE CRAFT

Made in Shanghai

Atelier Axen footwear is made in Shanghai, where established shoemaking traditions meet a considered approach to form, construction, and detail.

Drawing upon more than a decade of workshop experience, our shoemaking practice is informed by the traditions of English and European footwear.

From the first stages of production to the final finishing, each pair is shaped by a series of deliberate decisions, guided by an appreciation for proportion, precision, and the character of fine leather footwear.

The Making of a Shoe

The making of a fine shoe is a process of careful progression.

Leather is prepared and cut, the upper is assembled, and the shoe gradually takes its form over the last. Construction and finishing bring together the individual elements into a complete pair.

Each stage contributes to the appearance, structure, and character of the finished shoe. We believe that the quality of the whole begins with attention to its individual parts.

Form & Proportion

The last is fundamental to the identity of a shoe.

The shape of the toe, the curve of the waist, the balance of the instep, and the proportions of the silhouette define how a shoe is perceived and how it sits upon the foot.

At Atelier Axen, we place particular importance on these relationships, pursuing lines that are elegant, purposeful, and distinctive without excess.

Leather & Finishing

Leather is a material of natural depth and individuality.

Its grain, texture, and tonal variations give each hide a character of its own. The choice of leather and its finishing are considered in relation to the form and intended expression of each design.

Through careful finishing, the material and the silhouette come together, revealing the details that distinguish the finished pair.
