What is Goodyear welt construction?

Goodyear welt is a method of attaching the upper of a shoe to the sole. A strip of leather or synthetic material — the welt — is stitched to the upper and the insole. The outsole is then stitched to that welt. The result is a shoe that can be resoled repeatedly and that holds its structure over years of wear.

Atelier Axen builds its dress shoes with Goodyear-welted construction in our Shanghai manufacture. See how we make a shoe.

Goodyear welt vs Blake vs cemented

Construction How it joins Repair Feel
Goodyear welt Welt stitched to upper/insole; outsole stitched to welt Outsole can be replaced many times Structured; often a little more substantial underfoot
Blake / Blake Rapid Outsole stitched directly through the insole Resoleable, but differently; often a slimmer profile Typically more flexible and closer to the ground
Cemented Outsole glued to the upper Often difficult or uneconomical to repair cleanly Light and cheap to produce; common in fast fashion

Why it matters

  • Longevity — a well-made Goodyear-welted shoe can outlast several pairs of cemented footwear if cared for and resoled.
  • Repairability — the welt creates a replaceable interface between upper and outsole.
  • Structure — the method supports the last’s intended proportion through lasting and finishing.

How Atelier Axen uses it

In our workshop, lasting sets the toe, waist, and instep. Construction then uses a Goodyear welt so the outsole can be replaced without destroying the shoe. Finishing brings edge, colour, and surface into one silhouette. Read the full process on Manufacture, or the origin story on Made in Shanghai.

FAQ

Are all Atelier Axen shoes Goodyear-welted?

Our dress shoes are built with Goodyear-welted construction. A few specialty models may use different constructions — always check the product page.

Does Goodyear welt mean the shoe is “better”?

It means the shoe is built to be repaired and to hold structure. Quality still depends on lasts, materials, lasting, and finishing — not the construction label alone.

How do I care for a Goodyear-welted shoe?

Use shoe trees, rotate pairs, keep leather conditioned, and resoling when the outsole wears thin. See our Shoe Care page and Size Guide.
