Every pair of Atelier Axen shoes is made entirely in Shanghai — from leather preparation to lasting, construction, and finishing. Origin is a fact about where the work happens. It is not a shortcut claim, and it is not a substitute for process. This page answers the questions people actually ask.

Honest answers

Is “Made in China” incompatible with fine shoes?

No. Fine shoemaking is defined by lasts, materials, lasting discipline, construction method, and finishing — not by a passport stamp. Shanghai has long-standing footwear manufacturing capacity; what matters is which workshop standards you uphold day to day.

Why Shanghai?

Shanghai is where our workshop lives. Classical European shoemaking ideas — proportion, Goodyear welt, careful upper making — meet the standards we apply on every pair. We do not claim awards we have not earned, and we do not invent heritage we do not have.

Does “atelier” mean handmade only?

Atelier Axen shoes move through many exacting stages: pattern and cutting, upper making, lasting, Goodyear-welted construction, and hand finishing. Some steps use tools and machines that any serious workshop uses; the craft is in judgment and consistency, not in rejecting every tool.

How does Made in Shanghai relate to materials?

We select full-grain calf, box calf, and suedes such as C.F. Stead Repello for grain, hand, and colour. Materials may come from specialist tanneries; the shoe is still made in Shanghai. See Manufacture for the production sequence.

What about quality control?

Proportion is checked at lasting. Construction uses Goodyear welt so soles can be replaced. Finishing is inspected before a pair leaves the workshop. If something is wrong, we want to hear from you — Contact.
